The Trona Pinnacles is a place to visit if you want to feel like you are on another planet. You get this eerie feeling once you are there. The Trona Pinnacles is a unique national natural landmark full of tufa spires that were formed underwater 10,000 to 100,000 years ago. These unique pinnacles consist of towers, tombstones, ridges, and cones. With the distinctive formations, this area has been used in many sci-fi movies and tv shows for example Star Trek and Planet of the Apes.
We took this spontaneous trip looking for a place to go shoot astrophotography. This is a great place to shoot astrophotography because of the unique shapes for the background. Primitive camping here is also permitted.
Location: Trona Pinnacles is located around 20 miles east of the city of Ridgecrest. You take a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) dirt road (RM143) for about 5 miles off of SR 178. The dirt road is accessible to 2-wheel drive vehicles but be sure to use caution after rain. Be very careful driving here because there tends to be a lot of wild rabbits crossing the highway.
Distance: 3 ½ – 4-hour drive northeast of Los Angeles
